Reflection

“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

Have you ever prepared for something important, only to realize that when the moment finally arrived, you were not ready?

Perhaps it was an opportunity you missed, a relationship you neglected, a responsibility you postponed, or a calling from God that you kept putting off because you thought there would always be more time.

This Sunday’s Gospel invites us to reflect on a question that goes beyond our daily plans and earthly ambitions:

If Jesus came into my life today and called me to Himself, would I be ready?

In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom. Five were wise and brought extra oil for their lamps, while five were foolish and came unprepared. When the bridegroom finally arrived, only those who were ready could enter the wedding feast.

At first glance, this may seem like a story about planning ahead. But Jesus is inviting us to something much deeper: a life of spiritual readiness.

The bridegroom represents Christ, and the wedding feast points us toward the joy of His Kingdom. The oil reminds us of the inner preparation that cannot simply be borrowed from someone else when the decisive moment comes.

We can attend Mass with our families. We can listen to beautiful homilies, read Scripture, join prayer groups, and surround ourselves with people of faith. These are all wonderful gifts.

But ultimately, each of us must cultivate our own personal relationship with God.

Our parents cannot believe for us. Our spouses cannot surrender to God on our behalf. Our children cannot lend us their faith when our own hearts have grown distant from Him.

Faith must be nurtured daily, not merely remembered when we are in trouble.

We spend so much of our lives preparing for the things we hope to enjoy tomorrow—our careers, our homes, our retirement, our travels, and the future of our families.

These preparations have value. But are we giving the same attention to preparing our hearts for eternity?

The oil in our lamps is not something we should try to find at the last minute. It is nurtured through the small, faithful choices we make every day.

Do not wait for tomorrow to become the person God is calling you to be today.

Keep praying. Keep loving. Keep forgiving. Keep serving. Keep trusting.

And above all, keep your lamp burning.

For we do not know the day or the hour, but we do know the One for whom we wait.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for reminding me that my life is a precious gift and that every day is an opportunity to grow closer to You. Give me the wisdom to seek what truly matters and the grace to recognize the things that distract me from Your presence. Forgive me for the times I have postponed prayer, delayed forgiveness, neglected relationships, or allowed worldly concerns to take the place that belongs to You. When I grow weary, renew my strength. When my faith weakens, draw me back to Your heart. When I become distracted by the demands of life, remind me of the eternal purpose for which You created me. Teach me to use my time wisely, my resources generously, my gifts faithfully, and my remaining years meaningfully. May my faith be more than words. May it be visible in my choices, my relationships, my service, and the love I extend to others. Lord Jesus, keep the lamp of my heart burning. Help me to live each day prepared to meet You—not with fear, but with the peace and confidence of someone who knows and trusts Your love. And when my earthly journey is complete, may I be ready to enter the eternal joy You have prepared for those who love You. Until that day, let my life be a testimony of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
